Strange New Worlds S3 Will Mix Multiple Genres

Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have to wait until July 2025 to see the next chapter of the Star Trek adventures on the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, now that we have had a teaser trailer last April, we are being given more substantial details as to what will be included in the third season.

Last year, at the Season 2 finale, the Enterprise crew and some civilians were taken hostage by the Gorn. The antagonists managed to achieve this during their invasion of a Federation colony world. Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) faces a dilemma where he must choose to save the crew by defying orders or to stay back in line with the Starfleet command. In what is a Pike-show, as per usual, he chooses to go rogue, and it is not evident if he will succeed when season 3 begins in a few days.

During October in New York City Comic-Con, Paramount+ released a preview of where things in the series resume. The scene picks up from where season 2 ends with the usual bang and has Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans excited. The 2-minute-long teaser had given them a peek into an ongoing space battle, one of the must-haves in the series against the Gorn. The new trailer that was released gives a look at how the war will come to an end, while at the same time, what new threats will befall the crew and the kind of adventure they will partake in.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues with Pike at the helm; however, while the Gorn series will come to an end this year, the Enterprise crew will face a new enemy who will push their faith, commitment, and courage in unforeseen ways. Season 3 will continue with the trend where not all the episodes will be similar to the usual Star Trek series. Unusually, there are to be several tones within the season, such as action, episodes that deal with faith, duty, love, comedy, and even mystery.

Paramount+ added that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans could expect new genre inclusions different from what is known in the other Star Trek productions. The recurring cast members and the main crew are returning to play the same characters. The one most fans anticipate is Cillian O’Sullivan. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, O’Sullivan will be the Captain’s Science Officer, Dr. Roger Korby. Korby has previously been portrayed by Michael Strong in the classic Trek TV series and was seen as a more established archaeologist who specialized in medical archaeology.

In the current timeline, Dr. Korby and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) were set to wed; however, this was before Korby mysteriously disappeared. The new season will be showcasing the era where Korby has reappeared with a flashback for the old couple, and Chapel has started dating Spock (Ethan Peck) in the meantime. A new addition will be that of Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both expected to reprise a comedic role on the TV series.

The Season 3 April trailer had shown that the series would not only have serious blockbuster episodes. There would be a tonal shift where there would be adventure, side stories with fewer stakes, as well as one-off episodes with a plot twist, where at some point Kirk (Paul Wesley) will also be seen in the captain’s chair. Although the role that he will play in the upcoming third season is not yet revealed, Kirk’s stint in the captain’s seat will certainly be a life-changing one.

Pike’s words to the young Kirk as he takes over command, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” send a resonant message on leadership in Starfleet. The trailer from Paramount+ ended with Spock (Ethan Peck) dropping some “dad jokes” with the cameo guest actor Oswalt, who is also a Vulcan. The laughter moment comes after Spock does a first successful “high five” attempt, then tries the “too slow” move in a subsequent attempt. When asked to “go down low,” Spock’s Vulcan counterpart asks, “Why would you do that?” which later receives the laughing reaction to which Spock (Ethan Peck) smirks back at, “Because you are too slow.”

Release Date for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have its premiere on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+ and will air every Thursday until September 11, 2025.
