Wednesday Season 3 Announced—and the Internet Is Losing It

Netflix has released the first look of Billie Piper, 42, in her new role in the highly anticipated second season of Wednesday, the gothic comedy series starring Jenna Ortega. Piper will appear as Isadora Capri, a mysterious and intelligent character who serves as the head of music at the Nevermore Academy.

The Wednesday series, an adaptation of The Addams Family universe, is set at a school for supernatural misfits where Wednesday Addams, who is played by Ortega, attends. The British actress, Piper, was also best known for portraying gothic characters, including Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein on Penny Dreadful. Wednesday’s season 2 premiere is on August 16.

A former child prodigy, Isadora Capri is described as someone who takes an interest in Wednesday’s musical abilities, as well as the werewolf Enid Sinclair, played by returning series star Emma Myers.

Netflix posted the first look of Piper as Isadora on Wednesday, sharing the cast photo with a message on Instagram that read, “Always a great day when Billie Piper is a go.” The company also posted the images while sharing a series of other announcements, including information on the upcoming season of Wednesday.

Season 2 renewal was revealed at the same time, as was the debut date. Wednesday broke Netflix’s records on its release in November 2022, becoming the most-watched English-language series in the company’s history with a staggering 252 million viewers worldwide tuning in. It was renewed in January 2023 for season 2, which now has a confirmed release date of August 16.

Co-created by Brad Falchuk and showrunner Alfred Gough, the series aired in November 2022 and combined horror, comedy, and teenage rebellion. With a fresh take on the cultural icon, Wednesday earned Emmy nods for its star Jenna Ortega and won the hearts of audiences all over the world.

Wednesday was recognized at the Emmys when Ortega won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The actor was up against some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Aniston.

Wednesday season 3 is also confirmed, with a spin-off in the works

Wednesday is being renewed for a third season and is reportedly in the works for a spin-off series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a spin-off series for Wednesday is in development. The report noted that the show, which will focus on Lurch, is expected to be “powered by” the characters Wednesday and Non.

In a statement to the publication, co-creator Alfred Gough teased, “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at.” Additionally, Netflix has officially renewed Wednesday for season 3, the streaming giant confirmed in a statement.

In a message that accompanied the new character’s casting, Netflix also confirmed the release date of season 2. Filming for the first part of the sequel will begin in June in Vancouver.

After months of waiting, Wednesday’s social media fans were overjoyed to discover that season 3 was finally confirmed and a potential spin-off had also been started. “We are finally being confirmed,” a fan tweeted.

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams, was the first to confirm the renewal, posting a picture of Wednesday at home with the message, “When Wednesday comes, a better day.” “Wednesday season three. It’s official…we shall return,” the caption continued. Fans also took to the comment section to express their thoughts, including “And for many more seasons” and “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”

Tim Burton returns as executive producer, and several special guests have been announced. Burton, who previously worked with Ortega on Beetlejuice, the sequel to the 1988 film, returns to direct some episodes of the second season and serves as an executive producer.

Billie Piper is just one of the series’ new additions that also include Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Also returning to the show are Gwendoline Christie, who plays the headmistress Larissa Weems, and Luis Guzmán as Wednesday’s father, Gomez Addams.

In between these updates, Ortega has found a way to get involved behind the scenes. The actress has stepped up to the role of executive producer after previously ruffling a few feathers. In a podcast interview, the actress revealed that she would “change lines” if she didn’t feel they were “true to the character” and would sometimes have to “put my foot down” over changes that were not made or explanations provided for inconsistencies.

Co-creator Alfred Gough also had some positive words to say about her receiving the role, noting that she was already “deeply involved” in the production and gave “lots of notes” on the scripts. “If you’re that closely involved and you’re that closely aligned with your character, a lot of that spills over,” he told Variety. “You wind up becoming an executive producer, and that’s exactly what’s happening with Jenna.”

Joanna Lumley, another new addition to the series, has said in an interview that it’s always a pleasure to work for Burton. “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton,” she explained to Screen Rant.

“His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”
