Nine teens have been arrested in connection with the June 24 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina. Authorities say the violence was sparked by a dispute “over a girl,” but the fatal shooting was also at least partly captured on video by one of the alleged participants. South Carolina Attorney General Matthew Richardson confirmed to the media that the 16-year-old victim and several of his peers are facing murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting. “Teenagers need to take responsibility for their actions, and there are consequences to criminal actions,” Richardson said. “We can’t have that going on in our state. People just need to stop it and take responsibility.”
Wright’s body was discovered by deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office on First Neck Road in Johnsonville on June 24, at which point he had been shot several times. The rural road where Wright’s body was found is located about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Authorities allege Raper shot and killed Wright after what began as a verbal argument between the two men over a female acquaintance.
Prosecutors later added that several other teens had helped set up the fatal shooting by luring Wright to the location where Raper was waiting for him. It is alleged that the other participants knew Raper was armed and had even told Wright that he should not be there and that violence was likely to ensue. Prosecutors added that several other teens also took part in arranging the fatal shooting and also face charges in the matter. Three of the other teens have been charged with murder as well as Raper.
According to Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, she is unable to properly grieve over the loss of her son due to the recent flurry of court hearings. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she told Fox News Digital. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
In addition to Raper, five other teens are also being tried as adults under state law. One of the suspects is also reportedly the victim’s girlfriend. Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach was arrested by law enforcement on July 15 and also charged with being an accessory before the fact of murder, according to a local news report. Kistenmacher allegedly helped bring Raper to the scene where the other teens were waiting to set up a confrontation.

Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters with WBTW-TV that there are no formal policies in place at this time to prevent juveniles from being tried as adults in South Carolina. “We just follow state law in that matter,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can with the witnesses we’ve been able to interview to make sure that all of those individuals who participated are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
