The platform known for software development, GitHub, which remains a core part of Microsoft’s developer ecosystem, has disclosed major changes to both pricing structure and access availability for its flagship AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot. GitHub announced the creation of a new “premium requests” system on Friday, which will affect users who extensively use the tool’s advanced features. The new system will apply monthly usage restrictions for advanced AI models utilized in complex coding tasks that include “agentic” coding functions and multi-file editing efforts. The introduction of premium requests indicates that users who make regular use of Copilot’s advanced AI models might face higher expenses.

All subscribers will continue to have unlimited access to GitHub Copilot’s core features powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o, while users who want the advanced abilities of newer models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet will face monthly usage restrictions. GitHub will implement a 300 premium requests monthly cap for standard Copilot Pro plan subscribers who pay $20 monthly beginning May 5th. Copilot Business users will access 300 premium requests per user monthly, while enterprise clients with Copilot Enterprise will receive up to 1,000 premium requests per user. The Business and Enterprise tiers will implement the changes within the period starting May 12th and finishing on May 19th.

GitHub has developed new access mechanisms for advanced AI models to support users and teams with higher usage needs. Users subscribed to any affected plans may buy extra premium requests at $0.04 for each request. Users who need sophisticated AI support intermittently can benefit from this flexible pay-as-you-go solution. GitHub announced its new high-tier subscription option Copilot Pro+, which costs $39 monthly. The premium product raises the monthly premium request limit to 1,500 units while providing subscribers with “access to the best models” available, including the much-anticipated GPT-4.5 from OpenAI. Power users and organizations needing top-tier AI capabilities for software development will find their needs met with the launch of Copilot Pro+.

Copilot modifies its pricing strategy for advanced AI models following a similar rate hike announcement by Devin, another AI coding platform that increased charges for select users. The simultaneous rise of advanced AI-assisted development tools demonstrates a significant industry movement propelled by the extensive computational power and financial costs needed to maintain these complex AI systems. Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet demonstrates substantial improvements in accuracy and reliability through its capability to tackle more advanced coding challenges via superior fact-checking and contextual understanding, but requires more processing power and time, which affects service providers’ operational costs. GitHub’s premium request implementation represents a strategic effort to synchronize service costs with actual computational usage while maintaining service sustainability through a tiered pricing model that accommodates various user requirements and usage habits.

GitHub’s monetization strategy for Copilot evolves significantly with the launch of a premium request system. The base AI model continues to provide unlimited access without change, yet the updated pricing model now links the most powerful features directly with their operational costs. Users are expected to examine their dependency on advanced AI models more thoroughly and reconsider their development procedures due to this change. Development teams and solo developers must evaluate if the advanced features of models such as 3.7 Sonnet for agentic coding and multi-file edits warrant the extra expenses that come with surpassing premium request limits or upgrading to a superior tier plan. All subscribers benefit from unlimited access to the base model for standard coding tasks as their foundation, while premium requests and the Copilot Pro+ plan serve users who need advanced AI support for complex development projects.

GitHub Copilot has quickly become a significant and expanding part of Microsoft’s offerings, even after implementing usage fees for premium versions. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reported in August of last year that Copilot drove more than 40% of GitHub’s revenue expansion during 2024. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pointed out Copilot’s extensive adoption scale by reporting that its current business volume exceeds GitHub’s total revenue at the time of its acquisition by Microsoft seven years ago. The impressive growth demonstrates developers’ growing dependence on AI-powered coding tools along with their recognized value. Premium requests have been introduced to optimize the monetization strategy, which will sustain growth and better serve diverse user needs as AI advancements continue. The newly implemented tiered framework offers multiple options to accommodate different user needs for advanced AI assistance while aligning pricing with both service value and computational expense at each level of support.
