Riri Williams Faces Moral Crossroads in New Ironheart Series

Ryan Coogler must be enjoying life right now. Having just completed filming his next movie, Sinners, and already enjoying the fruit of its box office labor, the famed filmmaker now has another big release on his plate: Ironheart. The six-episode Marvel limited series just got a new shiny trailer from the studio in the lead-up to the show’s June 2025 premiere.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) will continue the story of superhero Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), better known as Ironheart, a teenage inventor who acts as Tony Stark’s protege in the original comics. The limited series, which will consist of six episodes, is currently set to be the last television installment in the MCU’s Phase Five.

Marvel first teased the project in December 2020, when Ironheart was set for a release in 2023. However, a few months later, the studio readjusted its long-term plans to release fewer projects per year as a way to prevent the market from getting oversaturated. The premiere date was changed to this summer, and some footage was also revealed at 2024’s D23 convention. According to Marvel, the series is “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center, which promises a darker, more grounded approach to the MCU.”

Marvel’s first on-screen iteration of Riri Williams was in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the third film in the series, Riri found herself in a standoff with Namor and his blue-skinned army after creating a vibranium detector in her MIT dorm room. To escape retribution for her school’s recent tragedy, she created a working vibranium detector with her roommate. However, throughout the film, Riri bonded with Shuri over their mutual interest in science and ended up building an armored suit like Iron Man’s to assist Wakanda in its war effort. When peace was restored, Riri was forced to leave the suit behind with the Wakandans before returning to MIT.

Ironheart Will Bridge the Gap Between Tech and Magic

Marvel’s Ironheart picks up shortly after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Per the official synopsis, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”

In addition to a young Thorne, the series will be packed with talent. Lyric Ross will appear as Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich will play Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana is Cousin John; Matthew Elam is Xavier Washington; and Anji White will appear as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée will play Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role as the dean of MIT, a character he first played in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed to play a role, though no details have been shared as to who he will play.

The new trailer sets the tone for the show almost immediately. The series begins with Riri showing up at a pizza restaurant that’s been closed for business. In one of the bathrooms, she accidentally locks herself in an elevator where a timer has two minutes before releasing poison gas. She is soon contacted by The Hood, who states that she is, in fact, in an “interview” to work with him. On the intercom, he says she will “slowly suffocate” if she doesn’t break into a floor-mounted device with a gas mask by the time the two minutes run out. Riri is defiant, however, and simply refuses to play his game, instead coming up with her quick-thinking solution to her predicament.

Impressed by her resolve, The Hood questions Riri about her motivations and plans. She states that she just wants to build something “iconic” like her armor from Wakanda Forever, and is more than willing to be his “partner in crime.” Riri is met with apprehension from her friends, and Natalie in particular, about her working with someone with a checkered past. The caution may be justified, especially after The Hood says to Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”

Judging by the tone of the first episode in the trailer, the series will likely dive into some morally questionable territory. It will be interesting to see how this changes Riri and whether or not she will succumb to more morally ambiguous actions to do something “iconic.”

The first three episodes of Ironheart will be available on Disney+ on June 24, 2025. The rest of the episodes will be released every week, with the series possibly setting up for a season 2, although no second season has been announced at this time. For now, eager viewers can check out the new trailer and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette.
